We took a short family trip to Japan, timed to try to see the famous cherry blossoms (sakura or 桜). While this wasn’t specifically a photography trip, we did bring our cameras and managed to find quite a bit to shoot as we chased the blossoms northward from our arrival in Tokyo up through Daisetsuzan National Park on Hokkaido. We traveled by a combination of rental car and bullet train (Shinkansen); both were easy and each has its advantages and disadvantages. Having never been outside of Tokyo on previous trips, it was a great way to discover more of the country – and to realize that we want to go back again.

Cherry Blossoms (Sakura)

As springtime arrives, Japan transforms into a vivid tapestry of pink and white, courtesy of the iconic cherry blossoms, or sakura. This enchanting period, deeply rooted in Japanese culture, symbolizes renewal and the fleeting nature of life. Visitors from around the globe flock to Japan during this season, drawn not only by the breathtaking beauty of cherry blossoms but also by the rich tapestry of historical and modern contrasts that Japan offers.

Throughout the country, the climate varies enough so that the cherry trees may be completely done blooming in one part, but just getting ready to pop not far away.

Looking closely, looking along a path, and looking up can provide a completely different experience of the ever-present cherry blossoms.

Japanese Contrasts

Japan presents a captivating juxtaposition of serene temples, quirky shops and moments, and awe-inspiring modern architecture, each telling a different story of the country’s rich cultural tapestry. The temples, nestled amidst lush gardens and ancient trees, are sanctuaries of tranquility. They stand as enduring symbols of Japan’s deep-rooted Buddhist and Shinto traditions, with their gracefully curved roofs and Zen gardens offering a peaceful escape from the urban frenzy.

Cities at Night

As night falls, Japanese cities undergo a dramatic transformation, emerging as pulsating hubs of neon and energy. The contrast between the ancient cultural heritage and the modern neon landscape is most vivid during these hours. Cities like Tokyo and Sapporo become canvases of dazzling neon lights, reflecting in the bustling shop windows and the vibrant life of the streets. The neon lights, in a kaleidoscope of colors, not only illuminate the cityscapes but also tell stories of contemporary urban life in Japan.

These glowing beacons guide locals and travelers alike through a sensory journey of tantalizing cuisines in izakayas, cutting-edge fashion in trendy boutiques, and the latest electronic gadgets in Akihabara. The streets are alive with the rhythm of people out for leisurely strolls, animated conversations, and the pursuit of evening entertainment. This nocturnal allure of Japanese cities is a photographer’s paradise, offering endless opportunities to capture the dynamic interplay of light and life, where tradition subtly weaves into the fabric of modernity.

We were captivated by the serene temples, charmed by the quirky shops, and delighted buy the surprising moments. Each experience, from the delicate cherry blossoms of spring to the vibrant neon-lit nights, was a delightful discovery of Japan’s unique character and hospitality. This trip has only whetted our appetite for more, leaving us with countless memories and a yearning to explore further.
